AN INTERNATIONAL competition to design a 'new Aldgate' as a gateway linking the City of London with the expanding East End for the 2012 Olympic year has been announced today.

The structure is aimed at celebrating the Games, boosting the City's links with its urban fringes and creating more awareness of East London's regeneration.

The contest, backed by the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects, will help define the identity of the rapidly changing Aldgate area.

The deadline for entries online is May 28 on the Architects Foundation website.

A shortlist of design teams is being announced in June, each awarded £1,000, with the final winning design unveiled in July.
