Army volunteer Richard Walton has won ‘Best Detachment Commander’ award for achievement, dedication and commitment.
Lieutenant Walton, a civil servant by day who works for the Young People’s Learning Agency, had no staff or cadets when he took over command of 25 Princess of Wales Royal Regiment Detachment in Bethnal Green—but his campaigning in schools and many nights and weekends recruiting in East London has paid off.
Now he has been honoured by the Greater London Reserve Forces & Cadets Association.
“I try to provide a busy and interesting programme for the cadets,” he said. “It’s good that this is noticed and appreciated.”
He joined the Cadet Force 10 years ago and since taking over as Commander has turned the detachment into a successful unit with 25 cadets and two staff.
