Assembly Member criticises Olympic branding protections

PUBLISHED: 14:08 13 June 2012

Small businesses are not benefitting as much as they should from this summer’s Olympics, according to a London Assembly Member.

Tabling a question at June’s Mayor’s Question Time in City Hall, Conservative member Andrew Boff accused Olympic organisers of being excessively protective of their brand.

He said: “Olympic authorities are protecting their branding to such a degree, that small businesses such as independent cafes and shops run the risk of being fined if they mention anything to do with the event.”

In his response, London Mayor Boris Johnson said: “I am very determined that businesses and companies in London should have the full glare of their involvement radiating around them in the future.“
