Shoppers in Canary Wharf were surprised to spot a rowing boat to raise awareness of a challenge which will see four former schoolfriends take on the Atlantic.

Jack Mayhew, 25, and Joe Barnett, Gus Barton and Angus Collins, all 24, rowed non-stop by the bank outside HSBC in One Canada Square on Monday and Tuesday.

They swapped turns every two hours, going without sleep – just as they will have to during their 39-day rowing trip in December.

They hope to raise £50,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and another £50,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

“More people have been into space or climbed Mount Everest than rowed the Atlantic,” Angus said.

“It’s a huge undertaking for all of us but when we think of the work that the CFT and the TCT do, and the people they help – we know it’s a very small token of our appreciation.”
