An audio trail has been recorded by a leading east London historian and a composer which tells the story behind Victoria Park for visitors as they walk round.
The trail begins by the Pavilion Caf, near Bethnal Green’s Crown Gate West, with a commentary on how ‘people power’ led to the creation of Vicky Park in the 1840s as the desperately-needed ‘lungs’ of east London with the metropolis spreading further out.
The guide, designed by University of East London history lecturer Toby Butler and composer Lewis Gibson, includes the origin of the legend of the Dogs of Alcibiades who guard the park, the Burdett-Coutts Fountain which was donated by Victorian philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts and the Alcoves which are the surviving fragments of the medieval London Bridge.
Users can be pick up an MP3 player from the Hub building in the park with the trail pre-loaded, or download from Tower Hamlets Council’s website.
