A TALE of a lack of equipment, high casualty rates and troops struggling to cope with abysmal conditions will be revealed at the Whitechapel Idea Store tonight.

Former Waterstones boss and library campaigner Tim Coates will be talking about his book Delane's War as part of Tower Hamlets' first literary festival hosted in its libraries.

Mr Coates details the Times editor John Delane's efforts to expose the poor equipment and under-prepared medical facilities available to British soldiers fighting the Crimea War 150 years ago.

The paper's reporter William Russell was one of the first war correspondents and detailed the conditions endured by the troops to a shocked readership.

The free event starts at the Idea Store in Whitechapel Road at 7pm.
