BARONESS Uddin of Bethnal Green has featured in a list of milestones for women in the UK - but Margaret Thatcher failed to make the grade.

Labour's Pola Uddin was the first Bangladeshi-born woman to be elected as a councillor in the UK. She earned a mention in the Women in Power: Milestones list issued by the Government's Equalities Office which is headed by Harriet Harman as the first Muslim woman to enter the House of Lords in 1998.

Hackney North and Stoke Newington Labour MP Diane Abbott is mentioned as the first black woman MP - elected to parliament in 1987.

But the list controversially fails to mention former conservative leader Margaret Thatcher who the first women Prime Minister in the UK in 1979, by name.
