Medical science researchers at Queen Mary University have been listed in the top one per cent in the world for improving life.

This year’s official Highly Cited Researchers list has identified four “influential researchers” who have been determined by their peers around the globe.

They are Professors Mark Caulfield, Panos Deloukas, Jack Cuzick and Patricia Munroe, all from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary campuses in Whitechapel, Mile End and the City.

“They have been recognised among the best for a fifth year in a row,” Queen Mary’s vice principal Prof Steve Thornton said. “This shows the quality of their world-leading medical research for better healthcare.”

The four have consistently won recognition by how widely their work has been cited in other people’s publications over the last decade.

Their fields include clinical pharmacology, molecular medicine, genomics, cardiovascular disease and cancer prevention.

Prof Cuzick has written 500 peer-reviewed papers and was chosen in 2007 by Thompson Scientific as “one of the 12 hottest researchers in all of science”. He was later awarded a ‘cancer prevention’ prize and the American Cancer Society Medal of Honor.

Research by Prof Caulfield has been independently rated among the top 10 scientific discoveries in his field and one of the top 200 most highly cited researchers in genomics since 2014, according to Thomson Reuters. He is an NHS consultant in Barts who raised £25m towards the William Harvey centre and brought three hospitals together to create Britain’s largest heart centre—this included the London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green which was closed in 2015.

Prof Deloukas, who joined Queen Mary’s in 2013, has written 400 publications and is listed by Thomson Reuters among the top cited researchers in molecular biology and genetics.

Prof Munroe’s research on the genetic and molecular basis of hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias has led to the discovery of 30 genetic loci associated with hypertension during the past three years. She has contributed data to several gene discoveries for cardiac and other genetic traits.

The new listing brought praise from the Scientific & Academic Research group at Clarivate Analytics, a scientific research and biotech intelligence service protecting and commercializing new ideas. Its chief executive Annette Thomas said: “The Highly Cited list identifies those having the greatest impact on science research, measured by the rate their work is being used by others.”

The latest citations put the four professors on the ‘A’ list of international researchers who help extend the frontier of science to gain knowledge and innovations “that make the world healthier, safer, and more sustainable”.
