Baudry wished his goal was the winner

French defender disappointed to only draw with Sheffield United

Mathieu Baudry was hoping his 71st minute header at Brisbane Road on Saturday for Leyton Orient would be a winning goal against Sheffield United, but in the end it was disappointment come the full time whistle.

Fabio Liverani’s team weren’t down, but a deflected strike from Bob Harris meant they were 22nd on Saturday evening and not out of the bottom four.

If they had held on against the Blades everything would have looked a lot better for Orient going into Sunday’s clash with Swindon Town.

But at present it seems only a miracle will keep them up. Despite that, their French defender is trying to remain positive.

“I was hoping it was going to be the winning goal so I am a bit disappointed it wasn’t, but we have to carry on next weekend,” said Baudry about his second goal of the campaign.

“A point keeps everything possible until the last game. We are going to give 100 per cent until the end and hope we get a bit of luck.

“This was a game we could have won and we should have won, though. Maybe we stopped playing a little bit when we got ahead and it cost us.

“Sheffield United had a few chances and Alex Cisak made a few great saves to keep us in the game. Second half we played better and created more chances and it was a game that could have gone either way.

“The goal for them was a deflection so it is little details that have gone against us, but we are going to carry on and keep believing.”

Baudry praised the supporters for the atmosphere they created and insisted Orient’s players are going to try and make them proud next weekend.

Although O’s might have been relegated on Saturday, they were upset with the result they achieved after the full time whistle.

“Of course we are disappointed because we could have gone on and won the game when we were ahead,” added Baudry.

“Alex made some great saves so it could have gone either way. The main feeling is we are still alive and we are going to keep going until the end.

“The atmosphere was great and it is great to see so many people come and support us. They were behind us and when I scored it was a great feeling and everyone was so happy.

“We need to keep it in mind that we need to make the fans happy and I think what they want is to be proud so we need to give everything and show it on the pitch at Swindon.”

Baudry admitted the players were aware of results going on elsewhere and revealed he was told to drop back into defence, after initially pushing forward with O’s at one stage needing a winner to avoid relegation.

He believes little details have gone against the Brisbane Road club this season, but called on them to beat Swindon next weekend to give themselves a chance.

“I was trying to push and I stayed forward for a little bit, but at the end they called me back,” revealed Baudry.

“With the result changing (between Peterborough and Crawley) we knew even if we drew we were still alive.

“I knew we were going to be alive until the last game, but I was hoping we could get a little bit more against Sheffield United but it wasn’t the case.

“Apart from the MK Dons game, where they were so much better than us, it has just been little details that have cost us.

“We need to focus on what we control and that is the game against Swindon so we just need to win that.”
