Berkeley’s South Quay tower UK’s tallest apartment block dwarfing Canary Wharf
A skyscraper up to 85 storeys high proposed at the Isle of Dogs would be Britain’s tallest apartment block and even dwarf Canary Wharf tower.
A two-day exhibition opens today and tomorrow as part of the public consultation process before the scheme being put together by developers goes before Tower Hamlets council at the end of the year.
It is the second in a series of exhibitions being staged at the Lantern Arts studios in nearby Millharbour, running 2pm-8pm today and 10am-2pm tomorrow (see map below).
“The height and number of floors are options,” a Berkeley Homes spokesman stressed. “The tower could be anywhere between 55 and 85 floors, subject to the feedback we get from the public at these exhibitions.”
The developers have submitted an initial ideas report to planners at the Town Hall for a main tower to be “around 80 storeys”, with two other structures at 35 floors and six floors.
The huge complex on the edge of the old Millwall Docks would have up to 1,150 luxury flats, 40,000sq ft of shops and 20,000sq ft of commercial offices.
The tower would be around 800ft high, if it gets the green light. The neighbouring Canary Wharf tower at One Canada Square reaches only 700ft.

Berkeley’s tower would also be taller than the proposed 75-storey skyscraper on the site of Millwall’s former City Pride pub made famous in the 1950s by TV commentator Daniel Farsons.
Demolition at South Quays and construction of the tower could get under way by the end of next year, with work on the two lower-rise buildings starting in 2017.
Berkeley Homes’ Harry Lewis said: “People were particularly keen at our first exhibition to see improvements to the public area. So we’re providing more than 60 per cent of the area as public realm, to open up the waterfront.”
The site currently has retail and office properties, but is listed for residential development in Tower Hamlets’ Strategy plan.
