They occupied two vacant shops in Bethnal Green at the weekend aiming to persuade budding entrepreneurs to relocate to Berlin.

The ‘Berlin Partner for Business & Technology’ has begun a marketing campaign with ‘Visit Berlin’ launched with pop-up stores in five European cities including London to market Berlin as “a creative, innovative and liveable metropolis” for new businesses.

The pop-up stores are open for a week to showcase Berlin in design, fashion, furniture, food, life-style and technology.

They are hoping to offer “an alternative” to Old Street’s Tech City, while Lufthansa has its Telekom “innovation hub” in Berlin rivalling Canary Wharf’s Level39 start-up accelerator.

Start-ups in the German federal capital accumulated more venture cash than young entrepreneurs from London in 2014 for the first time ever, it is claimed. The trend is said to have continued in the first half of this year, with start ups attracting 1.4 billion euros compared to 1.1 billion in London.
