The memorial at Bethnal Green tube station has been recognised for being a piece of “architectural excellence”.
The memorial was one of 61 buildings which were handed a London Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
All the winning buildings were considered skilfull and accomplished works of architecture.
The institute’s London director said: “London has perhaps the highest concentration of design talent found anywhere in the world.
“It is that concentration of diverse talent, skills, and exchange of ideas that makes it such an exciting and challenging place to work in the field of architecture.”
The memorial is dedicated to those who died in the underground shelter tragedy in March 1943, where 27 men, 84 women and 62 children were killed in a crush at the shelter’s entrance.
The £600,000 ‘Stairway to Heaven’ was unveiled in December, and displays the names of the victims on a marble and teak staircase.
