THE Bishop of London is in the East End this-eveing to promote a vicar who has turned round the fortunes of an empty church.
The Rt Rev Dr Richard Chartres arrives at St Paul's in Shadwell at 7.30pm to inaugurate The Rev Ric Thorpe as new Rector.
Mr Thorpe has been responsible for filling the church with a Sunday congregation of 350 regular worshippers.
He has attracted much interest with his 'money management' debt advice programme in this deprived Docklands corner of East London, encouraging parishioners who are trained financial advisors to give weekly surgeries.
Appointing a rector means funds from the London Diocese Office to help the parish continue its expansion.
