Four men and two women have joined Stepney’s team of clergy.

They were ordained to the office of deacon at St Paul’s Cathedral by the Acting Bishop of London, the Rt Revd Pete Broadbent, on Saturday, and will be working in churches across London.

The Bishop of Stepney, the Rt Revd Adrian Newman said: “East London is a place of great energy and vibrancy and those who are preparing for ordination will give a lot to this wonderful part of London.”

Among the new deacons are Ben Bell, who is joining All Saints and St. Nicholas, Poplar.

He was the founding director of Urban Hope, a community project working with vulnerable and ‘at risk’ young people and is interested in the development of minority ethnic church members.

Also ordained is Gill Newman, who is joining St. John of Jerusalem, South Hackney.

She recently worked as a hospital chaplaincy volunteer and is married to the Bishop of Stepney.
