The East End is doing ‘bloomin’ well winning awards in this year’s London in Bloom competition.
Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park have both been recognised as “beautiful open spaces”.
But there’s also glory on housing estates with EastEnd Homes picking up seven awards for communal gardens in Mile End in the ‘neighbourhood’ category.
Tenants and residents have been busy adding greenery to the drab urban landscape, working with volunteers from Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park.
Tania Nalywajko helped shape gardens on her estate, while Terry Lyle helped train park staff and took part in planning and developing seven public gardens created and managed cost effectively.
The awards acknowledge high quality green spaces and how communities like the East End are involved to improve their neighbourhoods.
Tower Hamlets Council won a Gold with Victoria Park as “best large public park”, getting the highest mark ever recorded.
Other awards went to Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park as a large conservation area, Canary Wharf as a ‘best town centre’ and both Trinity Square Gardens at Tower Hill and Museum Gardens at Bethnal Green in the ‘small park’ category.
