DOUBLING the number of flights through East London's City Airport has won Boris Johnson the coveted "worst planning decision of the year" award.
His London Assembly member namesake Darren Johnson (no relation) makes the award each year for the planning decision he thinks is the most damaging, in parallel to the Mayor's own London Planning awards. Darren's trophy is an inscribed breeze-block.
"The Mayor has waved through a massive expansion in noisy polluting flights that will blight Newham and much of East London," said Darren.
"Residents are fighting a legal challenge, while neighbouring boroughs never got a say. Environment groups have made an overwhelming case against it."
The runners-up to Boris's City Airport decree selected by Darren Johnson also includes the Mayor intervening to get the 63-storey Columbus Tower pushed through on the edge of Canary Wharf, against Tower Hamlets council's wishes "apparently because Crossrail money was at stake.
