Mayor of London Boris Johnson is being urged to review clothing contracts at City Hall and beyond after the death of more than 1,000 factory workers in Bangladesh.
London Assembly Member John Biggs is calling on City Hall to sign up to the IndustriALL Accord, which acts as a global union for garment workers.
Mr Biggs said that any contractors employed through the Greater London Authority, Transport for London, or the Metropolitan Police should be signed up to the accord. His remarks followed Bangladesh’s Rana Plaza garment factory collapsing in April, causing the death of around 1,100 workers.
“The tragedy at Rana Plaza has shown the world how important it is to be aware of the consequences of what we buy and where we buy it,” he said.
“This devastating event has thrown the spotlight onto British clothing and retail companies to ensure people making their clothes are able to do so in safety and dignity.”
