COMPANY bosses are being urged to invest more in setting up places for apprentices in their workforces.
Mayor Boris Johnson called on firms to follow his 'lead' after announcing 400 new apprenticeships a year to train as London bus drivers.
He has signed a deal with the First Group bus company for youngsters to learn to be bus drivers and work towards qualifications.
"Young apprentices are key to the future prosperity of London," Boris said.
"It's essential that we build a skilled workforce to maintain London's competitive edge. That means investing in youngsters who are keen to learn who add real value to any workforce."
The Mayor made his appeal when he met six young apprentices at a highways maintenance depot in south-east London where they are training.
The First Group apprenticeship scheme being piloted over the next 12 months is to become an annual programme.
