Members of the British Armed Forces today joined the Mayor of London for a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall.

It was aimed at kicking off a nationwide week of Armed Forces celebrations in honour of service men and women past and present.

“The role they each have in ensuring our national security and responding to crises overseas and closer to home cannot be overstated,” saidBoris Johnson. “We hosted a celebration in Trafalgar Square last year, and now the Armed Forces Day has been established as an annual event.”

The flag will be flown for the rest of the week over City Hall, where celebrations come to a head on Friday with a veterans’ parade across Tower Bridge and free public event in Potters Fields Park on the south side close by.
