A coder from Tower Hamlets is in the running for young woman engineer (YWE) of the year.

Shajida Akthar, 22, who lives near Devon’s Road in Bow, is a software engineer at Accenture, where she codes scripts for financial services.

She’s been shortlisted for the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s young woman engineer of the year award.

She said: “Awards like YWE are vital in inspiring and encouraging the next generation of women engineers. They also break the traditional stereotype of engineering careers by showcasing the variety of roles out there.

“When leaving college and pursuing my career in engineering, I didn’t have enough visibility of female leaders and role models in the industry. I entered YWE to expand this platform and become a helping hand, as well as raise awareness of the various opportunities available.”

Shajida is up against an aerodynamics engineer for BAE systems, a software specialist and a mechanical engineer. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on December 6 on Embankment.
