You may expect to climb over one, lean against one or sit on one.

But if you are strolling along the Hertford Union Canal towpath this summer, you will be able to eat a wall.

Staff and volunteers from Wick Lane-based Growing Concerns are creating a vertical vegetable patch along 20 metres of wall along the Bow waterway.

It will be made up of 12 panels planted with strawberries, lettuces and different types of herbs including thyme, rosemary and sage, which passers-by are encouraged to pick.

Growing Concerns’ Caroline Walker said: “It feels that at last the time is right to turn this bit of wall into a green feast and we hope everyone will enjoy it, whether to take a picture, think ‘I could do that in my garden’ or just snip a bit of thyme for their omelette.”
