An 11-year-old schoolboy from the Isle of Dogs has scooped top prize in a photography competition with an unusual view of London’s iconic Shard skyscraper.

Aqeel Miah snapped the 1,000ft high tower from an unusual angle during last month’s ‘Shard Lights’ display.

The youngster, who lives at Crossharbour in Cubitt Town, gets a £500 photography kit including camera and accessories for the best picture in his age-group and a family visit to the View from The Shard, Britain’s highest viewing gallery.

One of the judges, professional photographer Michael Tomas, said: “I was mostly looking for strong composition to make ‘Shard Lights’ stand out.

“London has a lot of places that can be cleverly mixed to create many layers of interest.”

Aqueel one 1,400 entrants of all ages submitting pictures, says he’d rather be an astronaut when he grows up than a photographer. He snapped his winning picture of The Shard from the Hermitage Peace Gardens in Wapping, borrowing dad’s camera.

The competition was the first organised at the glass-and-concrete “vertical city” complex by London Bridge, inviting amateur snappers to capture the best of the festive lights spectacle that lit up the sky throughout December.
