A woman in her eighties died this afternoon after being hit by a van in Bethnal Green Road.

Two policemen who happened to be patrolling the area rushed to her aid within moments of the collision just before 3pm but were unable to save her.

The accident occurred on a pedestrian crossing by the junction of Bethnal Green Road and Ellsworth Street.

The woman was in a mobility scooter at the time.

Michael Winn, who was at the scene just after the woman was struck, said: “A van hit her at the traffic lights. She was in the middle of the road with two policemen beside her. It was a pretty horrific scene. I helped direct the traffic in the area for about 20 minutes as it was building up.”

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “We were made aware of a road traffic collision involving a van and a woman on a mobility scooter just before 3pm.

“The woman was taken to an east London hospital where she later died of her injuries. A post mortem will be opened in due course. Road closures are in place.”

Parts of Bethnal Green Road are still closed.

No arrests have been made, police said.

An investigation has been opened by the collision investigation unit at Chadwell Heath.
