The second annual conference of the Brick Lane Circle cultural organisation next week tells the story of Bangladesh and its people at home and in the Diaspora.

Academics and researchers are coming from home and abroad for the two-day gathering at Poplar’s Ideas Store on April 28 and 29.

It opens with a lecture on culture and identity by the distinguished Dr Shams Zaman, whose medical papers have been published in international journals and has now developed an interest in Bangladesh’s historical perspective.

Other events include a workshop on the impact of international events on London’s Bangladeshis since independence, by Dr Muhammad Ahmedullah, and poetry and film in East Pakistan 1952-71 by Dr Nazneen Ahmed who is researching Bengali communities in East London since 1880.

The aim of the conference is to bring Bangladeshis and the wider community together to improve knowledge and help promote more networking.
