One of the oldest restaurants in the famous Brick Lane ‘Curry Mile’ in London’s East End has topped a good food guide to 9,000 Indian outlets across the British Isles.

The long-established Sheba has been named ‘Best UK Curry House’ in the 2013 Cobra Good Curry Guide.

“I never expected my restaurant to be so highly recognised and am very humbled,” said owner Motabir Ali. “We are a family run business and this tribute is the pinnacle.

“Our chef has been with us for years and all our ingredients are carefully sourced—we never compromise.”

Motabir and his family, who have run the business since 1974, have beaten off ‘hot competition’ from 9,000 outlets in the curry trade to take the title.

Pat Chapman, founder and editor of the guide, said: “Sheba has amazing dishes such as the Lamb Shank, Shofri Gost, Salman Tikka and a plethora of fish dishes that make it unique.”

The restaurant, one of the original Brick Lane curry houses, is not new to beating of the competition. It boasts the title ‘Master Chef of the Year’ three years running, 2006-08.
