Property developers British Land are to purchase the Daily Mail’s printing site in Canada Water at the end of 2013.
The move follows the newspaper group’s decision to relocate its printing operations from Harmsworth Quays to Thurrock.
British Land is the UK’s second largest commercial property developer, and has recently been increasing its presence in East London believing Canada Water to be a site with potential for regeneration. In May, Southwark council granted permission for the company’s proposed 34m redevelopment of Surrey Quays shopping centre, which they hope will be completed in 2014.
Mike Rayner, Development Director at British Land, said: “The purchase of this large site adjoining our existing ownerships re-enforces our confidence in the area and demonstrates our continued commitment to the wider Canada Water regeneration and Rotherhithe.
“We look forward to working together with the London Borough of Southwark and the local community to realise the full potential of this site.”
