A community group has won a minibus after racking up the most votes in a giveaway by the Axis Foundation.

The volunteer-led Bromley By Bow Community Organisation mounted a social media campaign after it was shortlisted alongside two other charities.

Its Twitter account drew scores of retweets, including one from former MP George Galloway, which helped it hit the top spot when the voting closed on Friday.

In a message on the group’s Facebook page, the team thanked the community, including the East London footballing community and partner organisations for their support.

BBBCO, formed in 2004, aims to empower local residents through a range of projects including using sport and music as a tool to divert younger members of the community from drugs and violence.

Other initiatives include regular lunches for the elderly and girls-only sessions.
