Bus routes affected in Tower Hamlets as drivers strike over unequal pay

Buses were affected across Tower Hamlets and beyond today in the first of three scheduled bus strikes in less than a fortnight.
The 24 hour walkout follows on from last month’s action, with workers calling for equal pay across London’s 18 bus operators.
The previous strike saw 20,000 workers take part across the capital.
Two other strikes have been scheduled for Friday 13 and Monday 16.
Currently, drivers for some companies can be paid as much as £3 per hour less than their colleagues.

Unite’s regional officer, Wayne King, called the strike a “last resort”.
He said: “Bus passengers pay one fare, so why don’t bus drivers get paid the same rate for doing the same job?

“We urge London’s bus operators to see sense and collectively engage in talks to give London’s bus workers a fair deal.”
It is expected the routes affected will be the same as those halted or reduced during last month’s action.
Bus and tram season ticket holders and Zip Oyster photocard holders will be able to travel on reasonable Tube, DLR and London Overground routes by showing their card to a member of staff.
