Buses were diverted early this morning after a road crash in Stepney when a car driver was trapped in his vehicle in the Mile End Road.
Emergency fire crews had to use cutting equipment to release the trapped driver, who was a taken by ambulance to hospital.
The A11 was closed in both directions. A mile-long diversion was put up at 5am along Hertford Street, Ben Johnson Road and Burdett Road as crews from Bethnal Green and Whitechapel fire stations and ambulance paramedics arrived at the scene.
A police patrol found the wrecked vehicle at 4.10am after the car hit a pedestrian traffic light outside Queen Mary University’s Mile End campus.
The driver’s injuries were not life-threatening, Scotland Yard confirmed. No arrests have been made.
