ONLY two days are left to register to vote in a Tower Hamlets local by-election which could be a crucial indicator in the way London’s East End votes in any forthcoming General Election.

Nominations for candidates have now closed for the four-cornered battle for Mile End East ward on November 20.

Candidates represent all four parties at the Town Hall—the controlling Labour group is up against Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Respect opposition parties.

But all eyes are on the two current MPs whose present constituency boundary slices through Mile End.

Respect MP George Galloway in Bethnal Green & Bow to the west of the line is switching to neighbouring Poplar & Limehouse constituency to the east, to take on Labour’s Jim Fitzpatrick at the next General Election.

Mile End East sits on the current boundary between the two rival MPs’ constituencies and the November 20 poll could show which way voters are likely to go at the General Election in this deprived inner city borough.

Those standing in the council by-election are:

Hafiz CHOUDHURY, Respect party

Jainal CHOWDHURY, Liberal Democrat party

Motiur RAHMAN, Conservative party

Rachael Mary Alice SAUNDERS, Labour party.

The by-election has been caused by the resignation of Labour councillor Rupert Bawden.

Voters on the electoral register have already received polling cards with the arrangements and where the polling stations are.

Those who haven’t received a card won’t be registered to vote, the Town hall warns, and must complete a household registration form quickly to be included.

The form can be requested from the Town Hall’s electoral office at Mulberry Place, 5 Clove Crescent, Blackwall, or by phone on 020-7364 0872, or online at: www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/data/your-council/data/elections/electoral/forms.cfm

But time is running out. There are just two days left to register for the Mile End East vote. The deadline is Wednesday (November 5).
