One of the trains on the Fenchurch Street commuter run has become the first to clock up a-million miles carrying passengers in east London and south Essex.
The landmark for c2c rail operators—equal to 25,000 journeys between Shoeburyness and Fenchurch Street—comes 12 years after the first of the new trains were brought into service in 2000.
“They’re reliable, air-conditioned and energy efficient,” said c2c’s managing director Julian Drury. “Our engineers know exactly how to keep them in top condition.”
The train has carried nearly six million passengers in that time, been serviced 67 times at the maintenance depot, had its brakes replaced twice, its doors and full set of wheels replaced once, windscreen wipers replaced 25 times and used 13 million kw hours of electricity which could power 4,000 homes.
It has also been painted in three different sets of colours—green and white when first introduced in 2000, blue and purple from 2003 and the current white design since February 2010.
