Rail operators have hit the buffers after power failures on the Fenchurch Street network disrupted C2C train services and knocked their record for punctuality.

Power problems last Tuesday evening led to signal failure which knocked rush-hour services in east London and Essex—just as the 48-hour London Underground strike was about to start.

So rail staff gave a sweetener yesterday by handing out 25,000 chocolates to passengers at Fenchurch Street to apologise for recent delays on the Southend service.

“Our recent punctuality record has fallen below standard,” said c2c managing director Julian Drury. “We want to say sorry for last Tuesday evening in particular and other recent delays.

“Chocolates can’t make up for everything, but we hope they help make commuting a little better.”

The company has topped the rail industry’s punctuality league table for the past year with 97 per cent trains running to time.
