A cab driver has described her shock and excitement at being asked to pick up the Duchess of Cambridge’s parents from the hospital where Prince George was born.
Tracey Mitchell, from the Isle of Dogs, was on a job round the corner when she received a message to go to St Mary’s Hospital in west London.
The cab was booked through an iphone app and Tracey had absolutely no idea who she was picking up.
The married mother of four said: “When I got there I was met by a press officer, who told me i was picking up Kate’s mum and dad.
“I said, no way, honestly? —I looked at him with disbelief and I was just trying to take it all in.”
Tracey said she was then told that the Middletons would be coming out of the door, stand on the steps, and have their photos taken etc.
“But when they came out it was madness. I pulled forward as I had been instructed too, but then all the media started calling out Carole and Michael, and I found myself in the spotlight of the world press with my Royal blue cab. I thought oh no and put my hand up to my face.”
On the way to Kensington Palace Tracey said Carole was on her mobile while Michael took in the views across Hyde Park.
Tracey said: “My intercom is very noisy so I couldn’t hear what they were saying.”
When she dropped them off Tracey congratulated them on the birth of their grandson.
She said: “Carol said thank you and waved her hands across her face as to say it was all surreal.
“I joked by saying imagine what it is like for me as a cab driver. We both laughed and she said she was sorry. —I said don’t be, it’s exciting to be part of it.”
And looking back at it now Tracey appreciates its significance.
She said: “I feel I have been a tiny part in history and this media thing, which is all over the internet and on YouTube.
