Tower Hamlets Council is calling for residents to help end violence towards women.

They are supporting two international campaigns, 16 Days of Action against Gender Violence and the White Ribbon Campaign, through a series of events.

The council’s domestic violence team will be setting up community outreach stalls and holding training sessions on recognising the signs of domestic violence and female genital mutilation.

Bus stops across the borough will feature posters urging residents to support the campaign.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said: “From November 25 to December 10 we’re asking the whole community to condemn violence against women by wearing a white ribbon and signing a pledge not to hurt others.”

“By joining together as a community we can protect the lives of our mothers, sisters, daughters, partners, colleagues and friends, and stop violence in the future.”

Statistics from the British Crime Survey show that women are four times as likely as men to fear for their lives, and three and a half times as likely to be murdered by a male spouse.
