Canary Wharf could soon be turned into the world’s first single-use ‘plastic free’ commercial district.

A campaign has been started following its ‘plastic audit’ on World Environment Day in June, to eliminate single-use plastics through public awareness.

The ‘Surfers Against Sewage’ environment group is leading the campaign with Canary Wharf Group to urge the public, businesses and local authorities to reduce their collective plastic footprint.

“It’s our dream to change our community and environment,” Canary Wharf co-director Steve Greig said. “We’ve put a template in motion for a single-use plastic free future we hope becomes part of our legacy.”

A steering group is being set up to help businesses and retailers eliminate at least three items of single-use plastic, using sustainable alternatives instead, to prove that urban communities play a role in reducing the harm plastics do to rivers and oceans.
