Property developers at Canary Wharf have been chosen for a shortlist of eight top companies to revamp part of East London's Royal Docks.
Canary Wharf Ltd has been invited to tender for 35-acres of quayside rejuvenation at the Albert Dock, opposite London City Airport and close to the University of East London and ExCel.
They compete with some of Britain’s biggest conglomerates to come up with plans by March 12 to turn the quayside into what the London Development Agency sees as a world-class business-led complex. The winning scheme will be revealed in September.
Canary Wharf has an impressive development record, including 34 tower blocks and four shopping centres in the Isle of Dogs business district. It is currently developing Crossrail’s Canary Wharf station and the iconic Fenchurch Street ‘Walkie Talkie’ office tower near Aldgate.
But it is up against some of Britain’s biggest players, including the Mace Group which is heavily involved in the Olympics and the new 14-storey UK headquarters of UBS global financial firm at Broadgate, next to Liverpool Street station.
