CANARY Wharf Group which manages property in Docklands has been named as the second most environmentally friendly property developer in the UK.
It was also placed half way down the list of 60 companies from all business sectors in the survey.
It is the first time the Group as a whole has received the accolade, although in 2008 Canary Wharf Contractors Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of CWG, was named on the inaugural list by a Sunday newspaper.
George Iacobescu, chief executive at Canary Wharf Group said: "Canary Wharf is one of Europe's busiest business districts with nearly 100,000 workers. Given the anticipated growth in the next few years, we have had to think carefully about managing the diverse range of activity here in a sustainable way.
"We are delighted to see our efforts to lessen environmental impacts rewarded. We'll continue to work with all our stakeholders, including Canary Wharf-based companies, to make an even bigger difference in the coming years," he said.
The awards programme included an independent staff survey on environmental performance, which found that eight out of 10 Canary Wharf Group workers'think green' on a regular basis. The company also scored highly on efforts to encourage recycling, reduce energy use in buildings and use waterways rather than roads for transport.
