Temporary pop-up restaurants and cafs could soon spring up along with street markets and performance spaces on the Thames waterfront at the Isle of Dogs.

The idea emerged with today’s announcement that top international architects have been appointed to come up with a new masterplan for the massive 20-acres of Wood Wharf at Blackwall.

Canary Wharf Group which owns the site at the entrance to the Millwall Docks has appointed Terry Farrell and Partners to draw up a revised masterplan with a better mix of offices, homes and shops than previously envisaged.

The design brief includes waterside parks, European style-streets and squares and environmentally-sustainable buildings to meet a rising demand for people to live close to their workplace.

The area is being landscaped in the meantime with open spaces, temporary plots for ‘start up’ companies, pop-up restaurants and cafs, street markets and performance spaces.

“The development is another massive piece added to the East End’s regeneration jigsaw,” said Canary Wharf Group chief executive Sir George Iacobescu. “It will help London’s digital economy to thrive by providing growing businesses with tailored office space and amenities.”

Canary Wharf Group bought the development rights to Wood Wharf from British Waterways and Ballymore Properties in January, with outline planning approval for nearly five million square feet of office, retail and residential space.

The new masterplan aims to integrate Wood Wharf into the surrounding districts of Cubitt Town, Blackwall and Poplar to “add to the East End’s reputation as the creative heart of London.”

Principal architect Sir Terry Farrell said: “This part of London is now much more than a global financial centre. What has emerged is a cultural and lifestyle district attracting the world’s creative and technology companies.”

Public consultation begins in the next few months, with an application to be submitted to Tower Hamlets council next spring.

The first phase begins in 2014, well in time for Crossrail opening in 2018 with a station at Canary Wharf.
