The 36-year-old former Reading skipper insists the O’s will not let up between now and the end of the season

Jobi McAnuff has urged Leyton Orient to remain consistent in the National League if they are to move up the table and further away from the relegation zone.

The O’s have improved massively since Justin Edinburgh’s arrival on November 29, but they remain in 19th place and just six points above the bottom four.

McAnuff has captained Orient in eight of their last nine games, missing the goalless draw away to Dagenham & Redbridge on New Years Day due to a knee injury, and been a consistent performer.

Despite his strong form, the experienced winger knows the Brisbane Road club cannot afford to rest on their laurels now and must keep striving for better.

“We were nowhere near where we wanted to be (when Edinburgh took over), so it was a matter of getting away from the bottom four first and not taking anything for granted,” said McAnuff.

“We had a couple of really good results in December, but we didn’t really move away from it so now it is all about consistency.

“If we are consistent we will move up the table and in this division teams are beating each other every week and positions are changing all the time.

“We have only lost one in six now in the league, if we had turned a couple of them games into wins it would look better, but we have given ourselves a good base to work from.

“We will look to stick to that and hopefully we can get a few more victories moving forward.”

Orient got back to winning ways last weekend with a 2-1 extra-time success at Bognor Regis Town in the second round of the FA Trophy.

McAnuff received praise from boss Edinburgh for his display and he will look to replicate that away to Halifax Town this weekend.

Even though Orient have stayed between 19th and 20th position since October 24, their recent run of form has seen them close the gap between themselves and the immediate teams above them.

And if O’s were to win at the Shay on Saturday, they could rise as high as 15th if Woking were to lose at Solihull Moors, Hartlepool United failed to win at home to Wrexham and Gateshead were also unable to triumph at Chester.

While it would need plenty of results to go Orient’s way for them to move up four positions, it at least highlights how tight the league is right now and should give Edinburgh’s side even more motivation heading to Halifax.

“I don’t want to get carried away and look too far forward, but if we could put together a sequence of four, five or six wins out of say seven, eight or nine games then we’ll fly up the table because everyone is beating each other,” said McAnuff.

“But obviously we have to do that. We have a lot of teams to play in the bottom-half of the table and a lot of teams we owe a few results for earlier in the season, so we will be going right until the end.

“We have got things to play for still and we will not be satisfied until we are on a good run and we are looking forward rather than backwards.”
