CITY Hall has pledged to tackle the blight of empty homes in East London with a slice of a �22 million kitty to bring residential properties back into use.
London Mayor Boris Johnson is marking St George’s Day today (April 23) with a pledge to end the blight of “unacceptable” empty properties on some housing estates which cause neighbourhoods to suffer vandalism and eyesores.
He has allocated �6 million from the kitty for East London to bring empty homes back into use in Tower Hamlets, Newham, Barking & Dagenham, Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Havering.
Across London, the �22m fund that’s been allocated will see more than 1,300 abandoned and derelict properties brought back to residential use. By 2011, around 3,400 empty homes are set to be brought back into use on some of London’s most deprived housing estates, encouraging owners to repair and bring properties back into use.
