A cat trapped in a burning flat was spared one of its nine lives early this morning.

Firefighters rescued the moggy from flames in the fourth-floor premises after being called to Jamaica Street, near Stepney Green park, at 2.48am.

The lucky pet was given oxygen and handed over to the RSPCA.

Half of the property was damaged by flames, which took crews from four fire stations just over a hour to control.

A woman managed to escape the flames before London Fire Brigade arrived, a spokesman said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, he added.
