Celebration mass for teacher Margaret retiring from Bishop Challoner School
A special mass is being held to celebrate the career of a teacher about to retire who has had a large influence on generations of children in London’s East End.
Margaret Wright is retiring after 40 years at Shadwell’s Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School.
The former head of Religious Education began teaching there in 1972.
But her link with Bishop Challoner goes back 54 years—she was a pupil at the school and came back for her teaching career. She finally hangs up her teacher’s gown on July 20.
She was the first-ever non-Catholic pupil when she joined at 11 in 1958 when the school was run by the Sisters of Mercy, but converted to Catholicism at 15 and had her first Communion at St Mary & St Michael’s in the Commercial Road, the very church where next Friday’s celebration mass is being held (July 13) at 5pm.
