THE sound of traditional Japanese instruments rang out in Spitalfields as hundreds of people gathered to celebrate Okinawa Day on Saturday.
Stalls serving sushi, Japanese stews, rice, sake and beers lined Bishops Place, off Brushfield Street in the celebration of the islands' history and culture.
Onlookers were treated to martial arts displays by Okinawan Traditional Goju Ryu Karate-do as well as music by the London Okinawa Sanshin Group and classical court music and dance.
Artists and artisans from Okinawa showed their work in an exhibition inside the market building while audiences watched the performances in the sunshine.
Families turned out to join in the celebrations the day ended with a finale of traditional Eisa folk dancing, accompanied by drumming as the Chondara festival clowns danced and entertained the children.
