Census: 3,000 of working age in Tower Hamlets have never been employed

More than 3,000 people who are not in education and are between the ages of 16 and 74 in Tower Hamlets have never worked.

The borough has the third highest proportion in the country and the second highest in London of people who have never worked.

A total of 3,400 people - almost two per cent of people of working age - fall into the category.

The borough also had the third highest proportion in the UK of people who are not in education and who are neither in work nor looking for work because they are looking after their home or family. Almost 14,000 people – seven per cent of the working age population - fall into this category.

A total of 113,000 people (58 per cent) aged between 16 and 74 were unemployed.
