The number of people served by councillors in electoral wards in Tower Hamlets is more than twice the national average, census figures show.

Across England and Wales, an average of 6,500 people are served by each councillor. The smallest ward in Tower Hamlets, Spitalfields and Banglatown, serves more than 10,000 people and the largest, Millwall, serves an incredible 23,000 people.

Millwall was the fastest growing ward in London, with an astonishing 81 per cent population increase, from 12,000 in 2001 to 23,000 in 2011.

The most densely populated ward in the borough is Shadwell, while Bow East has the least dense population.
