The unique Crossrail Place roof garden nestling next to the Meridian Line in Canary Wharf is joining the Open Garden Squares Weekend from tomorrow morning for the public to explore London’s picturesque urban green patches.
It is among venues across London holding free events tomorrow and Sunday to promote appreciation of garden spaces wherever they crop up in the urban jungle.
Activities at Crossrail Place include classical music and guided tours from landscape manager Alec Butcher and a ‘reflections in Canary Wharf’ exhibition by artist Debbie Ayles.
The exotic rooftop patch hidden among the skyscrapers of the business district pays homage to its location almost directly on the Greenwich Meridian, with its design divided into two geographical zones of western and eastern horticulture hemispheres.
Japanese Maples and Bamboo are on the east side of the garden and New Zealand tree ferns on the west, for example.
Canary Wharf is also hosting 13 workshops as part of the Open House Families festival programme by the Open City charity, to inspire the next generation of architects who may one day make their own mark on London’s skyline.
Children and families can take part in engineering experiments with different pasta in a race against the clock to build the biggest and best LEGO structure.
