London Mayor Boris Johnson is coming to Formans Fish Island on Wednesday to kickstart a charity auction in support of the Bethnal Green World War II air raid disaster memorial.

Fine art and photography will go under the hammer at Formans Smokehouse Gallery overlooking the Olympic Stadium.

The Stairway to Heaven memorial is now visible beside Bethnal Green Tube Station, where 173 people were crushed to death in 1943, in what remains London’s biggest war-time civilian disaster.

Tickets for the auction are £20, in advance only, and include a welcome drink and canapes. All ticket proceeds will be donated to charity.

Work by street artist Ben Eine will be on show, as part of an exhibition and the auction, at the gallery next to next to the H. Forman & Son salmon smokery on Stour Road.

A series of unseen period photos by Mike Pattison of the Jewish East End from the late 1970s and early 80s have also been donated for sale.

Viewing starts from 6.30pm and the auction starts at 7pm.
