THE old George Tavern which was saved in a star-studded campaign in London's East End earlier this year is celebrating another victory this week after coming second in a London pub contest.
The tavern half-way down the Commercial Road, which dates back to Cromwell's time, was nominated in a 'love your local' promotion by larger brewers to find the best-loved boozer in London.
Landlady Pauline Forster was crowned 'runner up' and took the £5,000 second prize, after The Churchill in Kensington beat her to the top spot.
Pauline, with the help of a string of celebrities including Kate Moss and Sir Ian McKellen, fought off plans to build a block of flats on Stepney's Exmouth Estate next door which she feared would damage her business.
