EMERGENCY services have been tackling a major chemical spillage in East London this morning which hit rush-hour traffic on the A12 Blackwall Tunnel northern approach.
Barrels of toxic chemicals were reported to have fallen from a lorry after a minor collision with a car at 8am on the northbound carriageway by the Old Ford turn-off a mile north of the Bow Bridge junction with the A11.
Northbound traffic heading towards Hackney Wick and Leyton has been held up while fire-crews in protective clothing clean up the carriageway.
Crews were mobilised from Bow, Bethnal Green, Poplar and Homerton fire-stations, as well as a specialist rescue unit from Millwall—but there were no reports of injuries. Traffic could be delayed for some time, police warn.
