Dear Editor,THE figures for child poverty in the East End are truly shocking, with eight out of 10 living below the poverty line. The policies have clearly failed in Tower Hamlets, with the situation destined to get much worse. Tower Hamlets council claims it had been shortlisted for a Government award for dealing with child poverty. The people making these self-serving awards must be having a laugh!

THE figures for child poverty in the East End are truly shocking, as the East London Advertiser, October 23, rightly points out. Eight out of 10 children are living below the poverty line.

The policies have clearly failed in Tower Hamlets where it is as bad as ever, with the situation destined to get much worse as it is so closely correlated to parent unemployment.

We tabled a motion at Tower Hamlets council calling for urgent action to address this problem.

Quite extraordinarily, the Labour majority sought to amend this to congratulate themselves on their achievements!

They claimed the council had been shortlisted for a Government award for dealing with child poverty.

The people who make these self-serving awards must be having a laugh!

Labour's cynicism is boundless and sickening. How can the council which has the worst child poverty figures in the country get an award for this "achievement"?

We've seen the Government apparently find endless billions to bail out the bankers.

Now we need that money directed to improving the lives of people in the East End.
